Ensay Set to Host Historic Return of Senior Football

For the first time in more than three decades, senior football will return to the Ensay Recreation Reserve when Ensay and Buchan clash in Round 12 on Saturday 11 July.

The occasion marks a significant milestone for the small East Gippsland community, with the reserve last hosting a senior football match in 1992. For many years, the venue was renowned as the home of the Omeo & District Football Netball League Grand Final, making this return a special moment for past and present members alike.

Located approximately one hour north of Bairnsdale, the Ensay Recreation Reserve has been undergoing significant improvements in preparation for the historic event. Volunteers have been hard at work fertilising and preparing the playing surface, while the club has invested in marquees to be utilised as temporary change rooms. Portable facilities, including showers, toilets and additional change rooms, will also be brought in to accommodate players and officials.

The day will feature Under 16s and Senior football and netball across four grades, with A Grade, B Grade, Under 17s and Under 12s taking the court.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, a number of former players, members and supporters are expected to travel from across the region, including Sale, to reconnect with the club and celebrate its rich history.

A special feature of the day will be the club’s commemorative jumpers, proudly displaying the support of Elders, who have sponsored the Ensay jumper since 1992. Following the match, the jumpers will be auctioned off, providing members and supporters with a unique piece of club history.

The celebrations won’t stop when the final siren sounds. Visitors are encouraged to stay the night and enjoy everything the event has to offer. The reserve has 24 powered caravan sites available, while a traditional spit roast dinner featuring pork and lamb will be served on Saturday evening. Fire barrels will help keep everyone warm as stories and memories are shared long into the night.

The event also provides an opportunity to showcase the wider region, with nearby communities including Swifts Creek expected to be involved in the celebrations.

While the day coincides with the WorkSafe Country Championships match in Orbost, organisers are confident the occasion will attract strong support and create lasting memories for everyone involved.

For the Ensay community, the return of senior football is about more than just a game. It is a celebration of history, community spirit and the volunteers who continue to keep country football alive and thriving.
