2026 Participation Update: Junior Surge Leads Gippsland’s Season Launch

28 February 2026

The 2026 season is officially on the horizon, and the latest registration data shows that Gippsland’s footy community is already turning out in force. As of late February, the Gippsland Region has reached 5,933, registered participants marking a solid start toward our regional goal of 17,407.

Juniors Out of the Blocks

The clear standout in the early data is our Juniors category. With 2,814 participants already signed up, the Junior ranks have already hit 57% of their yearly target. This incredible early momentum is a testament to the hard work of our local clubs and volunteers in getting families ready for the bounce of the ball.

A Focus on Women & Girls

A key pillar of our 2026 strategy is the continued growth of female football. Currently, our Women & Girls focus shows an aggregate total of 676 participants—representing 23% of the 2,571 target set for this demographic. This is likely to surge this week off the back of a range of local promotions.

2026 Program Snapshot

While the Juniors are leading the charge, there is plenty of room for growth across our other pathways as pre-season training ramps up:

  • Youth: 1,3516 participants (40% of target)
  • Superkick: 156 participants (34% of target)
  • Auskick: 731 participants (24% of target)
  • Seniors: 716 participants (14% of target)

With Seniors traditionally seeing a late surge in registrations as practice matches begin, we expect to see these percentages climb rapidly over the next month. AFL Nines competitions will be run later in the year in Gippsland with 12+ junior, youth, and senior opportunities to be run locally.

Whether you’re a first-time Auskicker or a seasoned Senior player, there’s a spot on the team for you. Head to your local club’s registration page and join the action for 2026!
